In the Roman times

Legend is that the legionaries in charge of watching over the via Julia Augusta dug, where the current chateau is located, two tunnels to stock amphoras of oil and wine. Thanks to them, the Château de Crémat can boast having the most beautiful Niçoise cellars.

“Li Plana di Mari”

Above these cellars, the Mari family built the Château de Crémat between 1904 and 1906, in the style of the Middle-Ages characterized by an impressive tower with machicolation and rococo ornaments. The farming activity, only consisting until that time in a small farm, will consist then on entirely in wine production. This area, before being known as Crémat, used to bear the name of the “Mari plane,” according to the name of the family of wine merchants.

A new appellation

In 1941, it is on the land of this estate that the AOC Bellet appellation is created by Pierre Tomé, the new owner of the Château de Crémat. At the time, it is the only entirely wine-growing farm selling wine in Nice. From then on, the Bellet wines conquered world-wide fame, thanks to their high quality and originality.
